| Providing Global Supply Chain Solutions
In 1887 Mr. Charles Gee opened his shipbroker’s office in Gracechurch Street, City of London. It is clear from very early correspondence that he had many varied chartering and agency connections in the Baltic and North Atlantic which still today remain major markets for the firm. A few years later Mr. Gee took two of his staff into Partnership. This practice has been continued to the present day, thus maintaining a private firm, wholly owned by the current Partners, who are involved in the day to day running of the business and are therefore in touch with events as they occur. For the whole of its history, over 123 years, Charles Gee & Co. has been based in the City of London. However, during the last 25 years offices have been opened in Tilbury, Felixstowe, Hull, Chatham, Birkenhead, Heathrow, Manchester, Bristol and Moscow.
In the 1970’s it became clear that survival meant diversification and expansion. Accordingly, the import and export departments turned their attention more towards creating a door to door service for their customers. This led to the Partners purchasing a fleet of TIR trailers and a transport company, C & H (Hauliers) Ltd., thus enabling the firm to broaden and complement its services.
In the succeeding years the group has diversified and flourished without compromising its ethical, customer-focused outlook. C & H (Hauliers) Ltd. has grown into the pre-eminent supplier to the paper trade, for whom it operates across the UK and continental Europe. Container transport is also undertaken, particularly in support of the group’s liner shipping business. A specialist, abnormal loads haulage company has also been established – Charles Gee Heathrow Ltd. This company provides bespoke service to a diverse range of customers, particularly in the fields of defence and aerospace logistics, again plying its trade in the UK and Europe. It also benefits from DFT Regulated Agent status, which enhances its value at our Heathrow location.
A link to the group’s past comes from its Ships’ Agency and Chartering activities, which continue to this day to give service to ship owners and cargo owners alike, across the globe. Liner business feeds into other group businesses, including Customs compliance where the group’s “GeeSure” product offers compliance to any or all UK HMRC regimes, on behalf of its customers.
Air freight is an important element of a true logistics provider. The group acquired the company C.T. Freight (UK) Ltd., based at London Heathrow, and opened a further branch at Manchester International Airport in order to strengthen its portfolio of in-house services.
The group’s latest venture has seen it open in Bristol in tandem with its majority share interest in the company PDF Services (Bristol) Ltd. PDF Services is a specialist logistics supplier to the defence industry as well as industries as diverse as power generation and civil engineering. They are proud to be contractors to the UK MOD.
Global freight forwarding is the cement that binds the group together and the group has particular links to Scandinavia, Russia and the former Soviet Union, America, South Africa and South East Asia. Its abilities are further enhanced by an in-house engineering division - Charles Gee FleetCare Ltd. and an in-house IT services provider - Charles Gee Technology Ltd.
The importance to us of our past is the stability and continuity that it represents. This gives the firm the confidence to adapt and develop to meet the needs of its
customers today and in the future.
